"Je ferai de toi une grande nation ; je te bénirai et je rendrai ton nom grand ; et tu seras une bénédiction." -Genèse 12:2
Le Nouveau Testament nous enjoint si explicitement de "marcher sur les traces de la foi qu'avait notre père Abraham" (Romains 4:12), qu'il s'agit d'une question de disciple de base pour examiner sa vie dans l'Ancien Testament. Dans les Écritures, le Saint-Esprit montre qu'Abraham est plus qu'une simple étude de l'histoire - c'est une étude de la prophétie ! La vie d'Abraham est une prévision (1) du genre de choses auxquelles les gens du royaume du Christ seront confrontés, et (2) des moyens par lesquels ils peuvent triompher par la foi. Au départ, Dieu annonce un double objectif : "Je veux rendre ton nom grand" et "Tu seras une bénédiction". La promesse de Dieu de rendre le nom d'Abraham grand n'était pas une promesse de gloire, mais une garantie qu'il façonnerait en lui un grand caractère.
Le concept biblique de "célébrité" se concentre sur la qualité de la fiabilité, de l'intégrité et du poids spirituel de la personne. Il est important de s'en souvenir, car nous vivons aujourd'hui dans une société qui se moque de sa propre habitude de "rendre les gens célèbres pour rien d'autre que d'être bien connus". Ainsi, la célébrité peut aujourd'hui être acquise par le scandale aussi rapidement que par l'accomplissement. L'un ou l'autre peut faire la couverture du magazine People !
Mais le nom d'Abraham est devenu grand grâce à l'apprentissage d'une marche d'adoration et d'un chemin de poursuite persistante de la volonté de Dieu. C'est le caractère du royaume ! C'est le chemin vers lequel le prototype nous appelle.
"I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing." -Genesis 12:2
The New Testament so explicitly directs us to “walk in the steps of the faith which our father Abraham had” (Romans 4:12), that it’s a matter of basic discipleship to examine his life in the Old Testament. In the Scriptures, the Holy Spirit shows Abraham as more than merely a study of history—he’s a study in prophecy! Abraham’s life is a forecast of (1) the kind of things people of Christ’s kingdom will face, and (2) the ways by which they can triumph through faith. At the outset, God announces a twofold objective: “I want to make your name great,” and “You shall be a blessing.” God’s promise to make Abraham’s name great was not a promise of fame, but a guarantee He would shape great character in him.
The biblical concept of “fame” focuses on the quality of the person’s trustworthiness, integrity, and spiritual weight. That’s important to remember, since today we live in a society which mocks its own habit for “making people famous for nothing more than merely being well known.” Thus fame today may be acquired through scandal as quickly as through accomplishment. Either may make the cover of People Magazine!
But Abraham’s name became great through learning a walk of worship and a pathway of persistent pursuit of God’s will. That’s kingdom character! It’s the path to which the prototype calls us.
