Qu'est-ce qu'un nom ?

"Ton nom ne s'appellera plus Abram, mais ton nom sera Abraham, car je t'ai fait père d'un grand nombre de nations." -Genèse 17:5

La Bible nous enseigne tout au long de ses pages l'importance des mots que nous prononçons. Dans ce texte, Dieu change le nom d'Abram en Abraham et promet à Abraham qu'il deviendra le père de nombreuses nations. "Abram" signifie "Haut Père" ou "Patriarche". "Abraham" signifie "Père d'une Multitude". Ainsi, Dieu a fait en sorte que chaque fois qu'Abraham entendait ou prononçait son propre nom, la promesse de Dieu lui soit rappelée.  

Par le changement de son nom, Dieu promettait à Abraham que le centre de sa vie ne serait pas sur lui-même ou sur sa position, ni même sur ce que Dieu ferait de lui. Le but de la vie d'Abraham était de savoir comment Dieu allait l'utiliser pour toucher d'innombrables autres personnes avec la vie et la bénédiction de Dieu. 

Le principe est clair : que les paroles de Dieu, qui désignent sa volonté et sa promesse pour votre vie, deviennent aussi fixes dans votre esprit et aussi déterminantes dans votre discours que le changement de nom d'Abraham par Dieu l'a été pour façonner sa conception de lui-même. 

Ne vous "nommez" pas moins que Dieu ne le fait ! 

"No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations." -Genesis 17:5

The Bible throughout its pages teaches us the importance of the words we speak. In this text God changes Abram’s name to Abraham and promises Abraham that he will become the father of many nations. “Abram” means “High Father” or “Patriarch.” “Abraham” means “Father of a Multitude.” Thus, God was arranging that every time Abraham heard or spoke his own name, he would be reminded of God’s promise.  

By the change of his name, God was promising to Abraham that the focus of his life was not to be on himself or on his position, not even on what God would make him to be. Now the goal of Abraham’s life was to be how God would use him to touch countless others with the life and blessing of God. 

The principle is clear: Let God’s words, which designate His will and promise for your life, become as fixed in your mind and as governing of your speech as God’s changing the name of Abraham was in shaping his concept of himself. 

Do not “name” yourself anything less than God does!
