La miséricorde de Dieu

Il pria donc Yahvé et dit : "Ah, Yahvé, n'est-ce pas ce que j'ai dit quand j'étais encore dans mon pays ? C'est pourquoi je me suis enfui auparavant à Tarsis, car je sais que Tu es un Dieu miséricordieux et compatissant, lent à la colère et abondant en bonté, qui ne craint pas de faire du mal. -Jonas 4:2

Jonas est le plus connu des prophètes mineurs, probablement en raison de l'histoire des gros poissons. Cependant, le but de ce livre n'est pas le gros poisson, mais le prophète au petit cœur. Jonas était un prophète envoyé pour prêcher à une nation païenne - mais il s'est enfui ! Mais il s'est enfui ! Pourquoi ?

Croyez-le ou non, Jonas a fui l'appel de Dieu parce qu'il savait comment était vraiment le Dieu d'Israël ! S'il allait prêcher à ces païens, Dieu pourrait les sauver ! Et ils étaient l'ennemi !

Après une seconde chance, Jonas y est allé à contrecœur. Bien sûr, Ninive s'est repentie, et Dieu s'est laissé aller. Jonas était en colère à cause de cela. "Ne devrais-je pas avoir pitié de Ninive, cette grande ville ?" demanda Dieu (Jonas 4:11). Dieu aimait même les Ninivites idolâtres qui habitaient la ville.

Nous pouvons savoir que Dieu est gracieux, miséricordieux, lent à la colère et abondant en bonté (Jon. 4:2), mais est-ce que nous reflétons son coeur envers les "Ninivites" détestés et violents dans nos communautés ? Répondons-nous à son appel pour aller vers eux et prêcher sa parole de repentance et de pardon ?

So he prayed to the LORD, and said, “Ah, LORD, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm. -Jonah 4:2

Jonah is the best known of the Minor Prophets, probably due to the big fish story. However, the point of the book is not the big fish, but the small-hearted prophet. Jonah was a prophet sent to preach to a Gentile nation – but he ran away! Why?

Believe it or not, Jonah ran away from God’s call because he knew what the God of Israel was really like! If he went and preached to those heathen Gentiles, God might save them! And they were the enemy!

After a second chance, Jonah reluctantly went. Sure enough, Nineveh repented, and God relented. Jonah was angry about this. “Should not I pity Nineveh, that great city?” asked God (Jonas 4:11). God loved even idolatrous city-dwelling Ninevites.

We may know God is gracious, merciful, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness (Jonas 4:2), but are we reflecting His heart toward the hated and violent “Ninevites” in our communities? Are we answering His call to go to them and preach His word of repentance and forgiveness?
